Fun Civics Activities to Increase Student Engagement

fun civics activities

If you’re looking for fun civics activities… I got you!

Are you teaching civics right now?

Civics in 2nd and 3rd grade usually encompasses topics like American symbols, being a good citizen, rules vs laws, rights & responsibilities, and levels of government.

Kids usually LOVE this social studies unit because it’s engaging, fun, and helps them better understand those news shows that their parents are always watching πŸ™‚

I have some ideas and resources that will help you teach your social studies units.

You probably already have lots of activities already, but hopefully, you’ll find something in this blog post that is new to you that you can incorporate into your unit this year!

Why is civics important?

Our students grow up to be voting members of society.

They need to be educated on how the government works and why it works.

Learning civics allows our young citizens to be an important part of democracy and our nation.

Civics read-alouds

Read-alouds are my FAVORITE for introducing a topic.

The following read-alouds are mostly about the president (which you may not even be teaching about in your civics unit!).

However, presidency is a topic that all students generally already have background knowledge on, so it can really grab their attention to understanding that the president is connected to the government which is a much bigger thing than just the president.

Here are some great civics readalouds (Amazon Affiliate links below):

PSST if you want read-alouds specifically on good citizenship, I have a whole blog post on that! Click HERE to read.

Civics video clips

There are so many fantastic (free!) video clips on the web to help your students understand civics topics.

Some of the websites aren’t actually free, but allow you to watch one or two video clips for free (score!).

  • Branches of Government by Flocabulary (PLEASE SHOW THIS TO YOUR STUDENTS… even if you aren’t teaching branches of government. I promise you that they’ll make you play it over and over and know every single fact about the judicial, legislative, and executive branches).
  • I’m Just A Bill by Schoolhouse Rock (an oldie but a goodie. These are fantastic and kids love them).
  • Teaching Laws, Rights, and Responsibilities by Kids Academy
