Being a good citizen picture books

If Everybody Did by Jo Ann Stover

This book is a silly but important read that will get students asking…. what if everybody did that?

There’s another similar book near the end of the list that’s also super cute!

This book is a great way to remind students that we are all part of a bigger picture – we need to individually act responsibly so that we act responsibility collectively as a group.

Say Something! by Peter H. Reynolds

This book is FANTASTIC.

It is motivational and empowering – a reminder that we need to stand up for what is right.

Each of us has a voice, we need to use that voice responsibly.

A good citizen stands up for others and does the right thing.

This picture book has a clear message, but is still a very quick read.

Sharice’s Big Voice by Nancy K. Mays

This picture book tells the story of Sharice Davids, one of the first Native American women to get elected to Congress.

This book is great to use when teaching your good citizenship unit because it tells of a courageous and brave woman using her voice to stand up for others.

Students will feel motivated and encouraged by Sharice’s journey (and her self-proclaimed love for talking!).

What Can A Citizen Do? by Dave Eggers

This is the PERFECT book for good citizenship!

It has a great message – to take action!

It describes different things that a citizen does – like planting trees, building things, and helping others.

The characters are inclusive and many ethnicities are represented.

Everyone in your classroom will see themselves in this book!

This is a quick readaloud, so definitely a great way to introduce the topic to students!

What If Everybody Did That? By Ellen Javernick

I love this book, and so will your students!

It is funny and clever – and makes a really good point.

You may like to splash in the pool… but what if EVERYBODY did that? Suddenly we may have an empty pool with no water in it….

This is a good way to remind kids that they have a responsibility to be kind and helpful. If no one is kind, helpful, or responsible… well the world would be a whole lot different.

Each individual is somebody. But together, we become everybody.

We need to work together to make the world a better place.
