Let me tell you how students use these main idea worksheets!
First, students read the passage.
Next, students complete four multiple-choice questions about the passage to assess their comprehension.
The four questions are all based on the main idea and supporting details, focusing on the specific reading strategy that you’re working on.
Students use their answer choices to color the small picture on the worksheet.
Reading passages are not the most interesting.
Throw in some coloring, and suddenly students have a blast!
Students WANT to finish the questions (and do it correctly!) so they get to color in their picture.
Yep, you’re busy enough.
Just print and pass it out to students.
Heck, even grading is easy… simply look at the colored picture!
Some reading passages are… well… LONG.
Too long.
If you’ve ever had a few students take the entire reading block just to read the passage and never get to the questions, you understand what I mean!
These main idea passages are meant to ASSESS student comprehension.
Hence, the passages are short and sweet to allow students time to answer the questions!
