2nd grade read-aloud chapter books

Charlotte’s Web by E.B. White

β€œIf I can fool a bug… I can surely fool a man. People are not as smart as bugs.”

I’m sure that everyone is familiar with Charlotte’s Web!

As you may remember, clever Charlotte the spider helps save Wilbur the pig from becoming, well, bacon.

This classic is one that every single elementary child needs to read.

How powerful to get to be the person that introduces Charlotte’s Web for the first time!

There’s a reason that this is a classic.

The sweet Wilbur and smart Charlotte are literary masterpieces that will leave you with tears, happiness, and hope.

My Father’s Dragon by Ruth Stiles Gannett

“It certainly is an interesting place, but I saw something there that made me want to weep.””

This book is a classic – for good reason!

This book is about a little boy’s adventure while trying to save a dragon.

Elmer Elevator is full of tricks to safely get to a mistreated dragon on Wild Island to release him.

The book is relatively short, so it’s a good read for those with a very short amount of time for a read-aloud!

The chapters aren’t too long and your students will love hearing about how Elmer Elevator outsmarts each of the not-so-nice animals living on the island.

The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane by Kate DiCamillo

“Perhaps,” said the man, “you would like to be lost with us. I have found it much more agreeable to be lost in the company of others.”

I LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE THIS BOOK.

I feel like this book is a huge favorite with many elementary teachers, and I have no doubt it’ll become one of your favorites as well!

Edward Tulane is a porcelain rabbit who is separated from his loving owner aboard a ship.

He, miraculously, travels through many new hands and meets many people throughout the years.

The reader follows his journey as he figures out his purpose and meaning.

I vote this book the number one book to make you cry.

If you either are good at holding back tears or have a heart of stone (just kidding!), this read-aloud will be perfect in your classroom.

Sideways Stories from Wayside School by Lois Sachar

“It’s funny how a person can be right all the time and still be wrong.”

The Wayside School was built 30 stories tall…this book takes place on the 30th floor.

The book has 30 different stories in it, which makes it a really good read-aloud since you can read a story every one or two days.

Although there are 30 different stories, all the stories are connected since they all take place from inside the Wayside School.

This book is silly, funny, and a super fun read.
